As we continue equipping our community to become self-healers, one thing stands at the top of my foundational list:
Learning to prepare living food — right from the heart of your own kitchen.
I believe the experience of preparing food and nourishing your body is one of the most therapeutic, and sadly, one of the most lost arts in America.
Let’s bring back the joy of home, where the air is filled with the aroma of real food, and the cupboards become vibrant with life-giving ingredients.
Bring your family into the process, and watch it transform your health… and your connection with one another.
This recipe is one of our all-time favorite bars.
It nourishes the blood, and when we cleanse and strengthen the blood, we heal the body. Thriving blood means thriving skin.
In fact, these bars are so alive, you could actually plant them — and they would grow. Try that with your bread or cereal, and then ask yourself: Am I eating food that’s truly alive?
Ingredients:
-
1 ⅓ cup grain of your choice
-
1 cup dried apricots
-
⅓ cup raisins
-
⅓ cup black currants
-
⅓ cup sour cherries
-
½ cup walnuts (soaked 4 hours, dried, lightly toasted)
-
⅓ cup sesame seeds (lightly toasted)
The combination of dried fruits creates a vibrant, living flavor — feel free to experiment with other dried fruits and nuts as well.
Instructions:
-
Sprout the grain - this step is key for digestion and nutrient absorption. (And yes, once sprouted, you could actually plant them if you decide not to eat them!)
-
Rinse grain and place in a large glass jar. Cover with a cotton cloth secured with string or rubber band.
-
Allow sprouts to grow until little sprouts are about ¼ inch long. Rinse thoroughly with pure water, strain, and dry on a clean cloth until dry to the touch.
-
Blend apricots and raisins into a paste. Add half the sprouted grains and black currants; pulse until crushed (not pureed).
-
Pour mixture into a bowl. Add remaining grains, cherries, and berries. Stir with a wooden spoon.
-
Chop walnuts and fold into the mixture.
-
Sprinkle sesame seeds on a flat surface. Press mixture onto the seeds into a rectangle and cut into bars.
-
Place on rack and let dry for a few hours.
Believe it or not, not only is this deeply nourishing, it’s also FAST FOOD. Haha… Once the sprouting is done, you can easily make large batches (like we do for our big fam). The boys grab them as snacks, and they’re perfect for on-the-go.
Sometimes I mix it up with dates, different nuts and berries, or even add a touch of cayenne for a little kick.
