Is Black Currant a Herbal Oil or an Essential Oil?

Posted by Brecklee Gale on

I’ll never forget the early days, juggling little babies, formulating balms and soaps, packing boxes, and answering every customer email when it was just me, when a woman wrote in and asked, “What does Black Currant smell and feel like? Is it an essential oil?”

I love these kinds of questions…

Black Currant had long been on my radar for its benefits for both skin and soul which inspired me and the ladies I initially introduced it to. I was searching for a way to integrate this rich, deeply healing oil into a formula that would meet our standards for potency, elegance, and performance.

And here's why so many empowered women (myself included) are now obsessed:

Black Currant is brilliant for dry, sensitive, mature, and hormonal/acne-prone skin types.

  • Dry & Dehydrated Skin: Its rich omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids deeply nourish and help restore the skin’s lipid barrier, locking in moisture.

  • Sensitive or Inflamed Skin: GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) is naturally anti-inflammatory and soothing, perfect for calming irritation, rosacea, or eczema.

  • Mature Skin: High in antioxidants like vitamin C and anthocyanins, it defends against oxidative stress and helps maintain elasticity and firmness.

  • Hormonal or Acne-Prone Skin: Balances sebum production and reduces inflammation, which can help prevent breakouts and support healing post-blemish.

It’s also beautiful for oily skin as long as the formula is balanced. In the new ABLE formula, you’ll notice that it’s further down on the list of ingredients even though it’s highlighted as a top performer on our label - this is because if you increase the concentration of an oil like Black Currant, it will overpower the blend. As it is, you’ll notice softer, more glowing and youthful looking skin with its luxurious potency and perfectly balanced richness. I am obsessed and so are so many other empowered women!

I know my girls in this community are learners and love to know some of the juicy deets, so if that’s you, read on.

Black Currant For Skin:

  • Collagen’s Secret Ally: Rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), black currant oil helps firm skin and reduce fine lines by supporting collagen structure.

  • Inflammation Whisperer: Calms irritation, redness, and hormonal breakouts, ideal for sensitive or reactive skin types.

  • Barrier Builder: Strengthens the skin’s moisture barrier, locking in hydration and protecting from environmental damage.

  • Antioxidant Armor: Loaded with anthocyanins and vitamin C to fight free radicals and prevent premature aging.

  • Glow Getter: Encourages skin regeneration, bringing forth a brighter, more even complexion.

For Soul:

  • Energy Restorer: Its anti-inflammatory nature uplifts tired systems, ideal for women juggling a lot.

  • Grounding Essence: The deep earthy berry aroma of black currant evokes feminine strength and resilience.

  • Soul Resilience: Known in herbalism as a restorer for the burned-out and brave, it helps the body and spirit recalibrate.

Black Currant is a cold-pressed oil, which preserves its delicate essential fatty acids like GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid).

This maintains antioxidant integrity (especially vitamin C and anthocyanins), and ensures a pure, unrefined oil without the use of heat or solvents, which can degrade the medicinal and skin-loving properties.

Essential oils, on the other hand, are highly concentrated plant extracts obtained through steam distillation or expression, used primarily for their aromatic and therapeutic properties, not for hydration.

There’s nothing quite like touching the earth in your daily skincare ritual - now more than every savvy, holistic-minded women are searching for purity and truth.
